The most common question I get asked as a wedding photographer is what camera brand do I shoot with? The first thing I did when deciding between the two brands years ago was go into San Jose Camera. I picked up a Canon 5D Mark II and compared it with a Nikon D3. The Nikon camera felt more durable and the interface was easier to navigate so in the end I felt that Nikon was a better choice for me.
Although I prefer Nikon, it is tough for me to recommend one brand over the other because I believe it is not about the camera brand but whether the person behind the camera is skilled enough to operate the equipment. Especially in different lighting situations. Customers don’t ask chefs what kind of cookware they cook with because they understand it is not about the cookware but the skills of the chef.
This brings me to my last point. With a experienced photographer behind the camera, both Canon and Nikon yield beautiful and similar results. I know photographers who have very expensive equipment but shoot really bad photos and I also know photographers who have average equipment but shoot amazing photos. Remember, it is not about the brand but the skills of the photographer.
